When to check blood gas

In a patient, how to determine whether it is necessary to check the blood gas analysis? Here are some of the circumstances.

Things that should be paid special attention to before the blood is drawn

1. Patient mood and temperature

If the patient has just finished an activity, is agitated, or has a fever, the blood gas results may be affected.

You should wait until the patient is rested, calm, and has a normal temperature before drawing blood. If the temperature is not easy to control, you need to input the temperature value for correction. 

2. Oxygenation status

If the patient is on continuous oxygen, it is best to stop the oxygen intake for 30 minutes before blood collection.

If oxygen cannot be stopped, oxygen parameters should be entered during the test. For patients with altered oxygen parameters, it is best to wait 30 minutes and then collect blood samples in the new oxygenated state.

Of course, there is nothing you can do in an emergency situation.

Sampling and Testing

Step 1: Sampling

Nowadays, the radial or femoral artery is punctured directly with a bd blood gas needle. After taking the sample, reverse the vertical direction at least 5 times and rotate the palm for at least 5 seconds.

Step 2: Go to the machine

The blood gas machine will be there whether you check it or not, so just walk gently up to it.
